It was one bad road trip…...
My worst trip ever started when I broke down, just leaving the yard, one day. I got fixed up and hit the road…an unfortunate start to a trip, but these things can happen…..but little did I know what further disasters were about to happen!
I made it to Pass Lake for fuel, only to find my fuel card was maxed out! I called dispatch and of course there was no one available on a Saturday night to set up a Commchek for me, so I paid the bill out of my pocket.
I then proceeded off to Headingly, went to bed and got up in the morning, only to find 2 flat tires on my trailer. I picked up a board full of nails when parking, as I was half asleep. There was no one in dispatch still, so I paid for the repairs and tires out of my pocket again, and made my drops across the prairies.
I hit Vancouver, only to find out my delivery there, was a residential address! Yippee! I kicked that delivery off, went to bed, and slept through my next appointment (was in their yard!) I had to rebook the appointment, and then when empty, I hit Washington for my reload.
I had to buy pallets, again out of my pocket. I finally got a Commchek, which was wrong, and took off, homeward bound. On the way, I had a ‘maxi’ let go, so I pulled into the rest area in Wyoming.
It was a hot day, so I pulled up on the grass, as no one was around, to clamp off the maxi and wash up, when I saw a sign that read, ‘Rattlesnake Infested Area‘, right after I was lying on the ground working on the trailer!
This was turning out to be a really, really bad road trip.
I took off headed for home, again, mad about money, fuel etc. I was calming down, when the night lights start flickering, then no trailer lights. I checked everything and couldn’t find the problem, so I hot wired them off the reefer. Now there were no lights or signals or anything. I gave up until the next morning.
In the morning, I messed with the lights again, got really mad, with all the problems, so I decided to run and get close to Chicago, wait it out, let the traffic go and head on through and get to I-294 and ’94, and smell smoke.
I was approaching an accident on the road, when I look in the mirror to see smoke jumping out a light cord pig tail off the back of the bunk, having a melt down! I got out of the truck, and went to grab the fire extinguisher, and I grabbed a bottle of Febreeze instead! I had dumped Febreeze on the fire!
So now I have no trailer lights at all and it starts to pour rain. I fixed the lights as best as I could, was REALLY mad, and hammer down toward Detroit. Good, I thought, the scales are closed… finally things are going my way….. then BANG, the air bag on the steering goes.
I pull over and grab the spare and replace it in the pouring rain and thunderstorm. I put the tools away and look…. no lights again, so I grab some wire, rigged it up and burned my hand…. I kicked the tires and yelled and swore! I got it fixed, used the rain to shower and wash up and took off headed for home once again.
I finally made it back to Stoney Creek, threw my bills in the box and went home. I didn’t have much desire to go on another road trip for a long, long time.
What a hell of a bad road trip this was.
