Letter to Smart Trucking
I work in Northern Saskatchewan hauling logs. We are allowed 75000kg (165000 lbs roughly) on a ‘Super-B’, weather permitting.
The Pay System
We get paid by the tonne or metric ton, equal to 1000 k brought in. The mills take care of the main haul routes or make an agreement for payment to the RM to maintain them. The mills dictate road speed and hauling weights. We have electronic GPS systems in every truck.
The Rates and The Fines
The rates aren’t set until 2-3 weeks, after we have been hauling. They take the fastest round time (speeding or not) and calculate distance and type of trees and quality.
Then come the fines. The mills are allowed a 10% variance on their weigh scales. We are allowed about 5% variance or less on our weights. on 75000kg we are allowed 500kg over without a fine. At 75510kg, we are fined $15. At 76010kg, we are fined $35. At 76510kg, we are fined $100. At 77010kg, we are fined $250.
The Speeding Fines
Then, there’s speeding fines. We have a GPS system in every truck (mandatory). We are allowed 3 mph over the posted speed limit for passing, running hills, etc. Here’s where it gets funny. The mills break up the roads into “sections”. If you are caught speeding in that section, they take your load. There is no ‘real rhyme or reason for it’, you just don’t get paid for that load. They take the wood, and you get nothing. The worst of it is, you don’t learn of it until 3 weeks or more later when you get your cheque! Now, imagine working long, hard hours 14-16 hours usually, for 12 days straight, 2 days off, and not getting paid for it.
Guess Your Weight!
We use pressure gauges to get our weight…. uphill, downhill, in a hollow, over a bump, they all make a difference. You never know what you have for weight, until you pull onto the scale.
You never know if you are getting paid, and if you crash or break something, it’s all on you.

Response to Jason — Wow. The stress from a trucking job like this would really be excessive. What a system! I’m surprised any labour board would allow this type of practice. You’re a brave man, Jason.I hope you get paid for what you do. Trucking is just way too tough, especially this kind of trucking you do, NOT to get paid!
It’s this kind of situation that gets me really warm under the collar. This should NOT be allowed. Again, like always, it’s the trucker that takes the hit, if there’s a ‘hit to be taken’.
