Why A CDL Isn’t Enough

There’s such a huge difference between:

5 years of pin-to-pin work on nothing but nice, flat asphalt
Running oversized loads through the Rockies, navigating weather, elevation changes, and paying attention to minute detail
Maneuvering double trailers through tight city streets or yards, where one wrong move can be very expensive
Driving a loaded tanker on icy roads
Handling a load of logs on a narrow mountain passes

Yet the industry still treats these vastly different skill sets as if they’re interchangeable. That mindset has to end.

The Trucking Industry Has Radically Changed

Modern day trucking is very different today, than it was 30 years ago.

The trucks are more sophisticated (not better), there’s a ton of rules and regs to abide by, and traffic volume is exponentially greater, just to say a few.

A competent truck driver:

Is skilled behind the wheel
Has sound judgment
Has a basic mechanical understanding
Has many thousands of hours of practical ‘seat time’ (behind the wheel experience)

That license proves that you passed a test. It does not prove you can safely handle extreme weather conditions, oversized loads, or high-pressure deliveries.

Learning From the Pros

If may be one of the lucky ones and have had the privilege of working alongside true professionals who are a ‘fine hand at the wheel’, You know the type… the driver who rolls into the parking lot, with a long-wheelbase truck and 53′ trailer, like he owns the parking lot. He rolls in smooth, clean and slick and earns the respect of everyone watching without a word being spoken.

That kind of mastery doesn’t come from a weekend course or 50 hours in a classroom.

It comes from years of experience, from learning to read the road, anticipate hazards, and handle equipment under pressure.

Handing Out ‘Keys Like Candy’

Every time a driver gets a license, it is assumed he’s ready for the challenges of the road.

And every time this happens, the trucking industry takes a chance.

The industry takes a chance and assumes the driver is ready to take on any and all challenges of the job.

What a gamble!

Driving a truck is a skilled profession. It takes experience, training, and guidance to safely and confidently control 80,000+ pounds of truck, trailer, and cargo.

An 80 hour course in a classroom with 10 hours of seat time, does not make a capable, competent safe driver.

Time For a Reality Check

If the trucking industry really cared about it’s drivers (and the driving public!), it would recognize that it takes skill, experience and extensive training to be granted a CDL.

Truck driving is a trade and should be treated as such.

Pretending that holding a license is enough has already cost too much.

It’s time to demand better standards, real training and mentorship, and a respect for this trade that matches up to the responsibility behind the wheel.)
